About The Magicians' Collective

Welcome to our little corner of the Magic universe!

Since the advent of the web, and its democratization of content creation - we’ve experienced an explosion in the amount of content available to those seeking to perform magic, as well as those interested in learning more about this art. Unfortunately, this explosion in the availability of magic content hasn’t always been accompanied by an equal growth in the quality and the advancement of this most amazing creative endeavor of ours. The last decade has seen an explosion of online magic retailers, and there are numerous online forums and discussion boards dedicated to the “what” and “how” of magic. We believe there is a need for a space for those performers and lovers of magic that want to engage in the “why” of this craft. Perhaps, like us, many of you possess a desire to go beyond the “what” and “how” that magic puzzles present, and give magic the time, effort, thought and energy that it deserves. There is no downside to this study. You will learn more about the craft you love, and more importantly, find unique and meaningful ways to better engage in that passion. The community will become the “why.”

There are thousands of magic books that teach methods (it is said that more magic books are published every year than any other type of books). Each of us can find countless methods for a double lift by a variety of authors. We can comb through almost infinite ideas for new effects and new methods to achieve them. Our concern is that these tricks and methods are putting flashiness and skills above and beyond what makes magic such an intellectual form of creativity: its principles, theories and philosophies.

We think that Max Maven said it best when he said…

”THE GREAT TRAGEDY OF 20TH CENTURY MAGIC IN THE LARGER PICTURE IS THAT MAGICIANS HAVE TAKEN AN ART FORM THAT IS INHERENTLY PROFOUND AND RENDERED IT TRIVIAL."

Max Maven

Unless we work to preserve the foundations of Magic, they’ll be all but forgotten in a generation’s time. And thus…The Magicians’ Collective is born. Not out of a desire to say one version of magic is better than another. But instead to have some of the greatest minds in the world, that love magic, creativity and self-expression, to have a safe place to share their ideas. This is a site for writers that think deep about their ideas on magic, art and performance.

It’s for this reason that at TMC you won’t find any tricks or methods (at least not in their traditional sense). At least not if the focus and the intent is to teach yet another trick or method.

What we hope that you will find here is engaging, stimulating and thought provoking writing that will move you, challenge you to push beyond your current knowledge, understanding and limits. You may end up with more questions than answers, and that is fine with us. We hope it will help open up your mind and start seeing, exploring and presenting magic in new and interesting ways.

We hope you’ll like it and stay here for a while.

Best,
Diego & Aaron
